Abandoned kittens looking for new homes or temporary shelter

Purrpaws, an animal shelter on the outskirts of Vereeniging, has asked people to adopt kittens or provide temporary homes for them.

The animal shelter, where Lindie van Rooyen and her daughter are already struggling to feed and home hundreds of abandoned cats and dogs, has been inundated with unwanted kittens which were left at their home this week.

On Monday, a dozen kittens were dumped at the entrance to the smallholding. On Tuesday another box full of kittens was left in the driveway.

There are now more than 50 kittens being looked after by Purrpaws and the animals desperately need good homes.

All the kittens are domesticated and, so far, they are all in relatively good health — but the shelter does not have separate amenities for them.

Other animals in the wire-fenced runs may have contagious conditions which spread rapidly, and small kittens are the most susceptible to illness, particularly in the current heatwave.

This is the worst time of year to try to home abandoned animals because many people are away for the holidays and do not want to take on a new pet until they return.

Van Rooyen said the heat and the crowded conditions at the shelter meant that the kittens needed to be moved as a matter of urgency.

Purrpaws has appealed not only to prospective adopters, but also to anyone willing to provide temporary foster homes until permanent homes are found.
