The organisers of the Global Citizen Festival have insisted that the safety of guests was "always of paramount importance" after scores of people were attacked outside the stadium on Sunday, December 2.

After the concert, in which 58 heads of state and international stars pledge to do their bit to end global poverty, concert-goers were mugged outside the stadium at a nearby Sasol garage.

Police have insisted that they were present to maintain safety, but footage obtained by TimesLIVE shows only one police car passing through the garage at 2am.

Global Citizen and House of Mandela said the incidents of crime were "disturbing" and said it "strongly empathised" with people's hurt and anger.

Seven people were arrested after the violence and TimesLIVE understands that an internal investigation by the police of its failure to protect people and follow protocols was under way.
