In a bid to highlight the plight of Saharawi landmine victims, former Miss Earth SA and social activist Catherine Constantinides has completed a marathon in the Sahara.

Taking to her social media page after completing the race on Tuesday, Constantinides described the experience as gruelling.

"Today was gruelling in every sense of the word. Physically, Mentally & Emotionally. But Today I CONQUERED!," she said.

One of the people she honoured with her marathon is a man who lost three limbs in a landmine explosion in the desert several years ago.

On her social media page, Constantinides said she had turned her focus to this plight amid concerns that Western Sahara was heavily contaminated with landmines and explosive remnants of war.

"These endanger the lives of local Saharawi population and their livestock, and block safe access to arable land and water sources," she said.
