A security guard who opened fire on a colleague, killing him, has been jailed for 20 years.

Lieutenant-Colonel Thulani Zwane said Phumlani Dlamini, 49, was performing his duties as head of security in Washington Road in Scottsville, Pietermaritzburg, when he was attacked by his colleague, Simphiwe Hlengwa, on January 14 2016 at 3.30pm.

“Hlengwa, 40, opened fire, fatally wounding Dlamini ... before fleeing the scene."

Eleven days after the incident, Hlengwa handed himself over to the police.

He made several court appearances in the Pietermaritzburg Regional Court, before being convicted and sentenced this week, said Zwane.
