Speaking on behalf of the Meyiwa family, AfriForum’s advocate Gerrie Nel says they are devastated that the murder trial of the soccer star, who died in October 2014, will have to restart.

“If you put yourself in their position, it's almost 10 years since the event and the matter is starting on July 17 and everything that has happened up until now should be forgotten,” said Nel.

Nel is the legal representative for Meyiwa’s mother and sister.

The trial will start de novo (from scratch) due to the appointment of a new judge. Retired judge Ratha Mokgoatlheng is being tipped to take over from judge Tshifhiwa Maumela.

TimesLIVE also spoke to Meyiwa's brother Sifiso, who says the case is now in the right hands.

“We believe he [Mokgoatlheng] will avoid delays as much as he can since he knows that the whole nation wants justice, the family wants justice, even Fifa, they want justice about this case.”

The case, which began in April 2022, has been marred by delays since the beginning, most notably the various changes in legal counsels.

According to Nel, all the issues have been settled and he is confident there won't be many more delays.
