A strong earthquake has struck off the coast of the Pacific island nation of Fiji.

There are no immediate reports of injuries or damage and no tsunami warning has been issued.

The U.S. Geological Survey says the 6.6-magnitude quake struck Friday about 630 kilometres south of the capital Suva at a depth of 528 kilometres.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre did not issue a tsunami warning.

Earthquakes occur regularly in the South Pacific, where several tectonic plates converge.
