Police Minister Nkosinathi Nhleko on Thursday condemned the killing of a miner in Kroondal, near Rustenburg in the North West.

The killings of miners in the North West were causing tension in the area, Nhleko said.

A miner from Samancor Chrome mine was shot dead outside a bottle store in Kroondal on Wednesday around 5pm, Colonel Sabata Mokgwabone said.

It was alleged that the man and a woman were getting into a car outside the bottle store when men fired at them. The gunmen were in a car at the time.

On Tuesday, a man was shot dead in Marikana. The 38-year-old was walking home when occupants of a car shot him.

"I would... like to appeal to community leaders to show leadership and encourage a spirit of peace and also to urge those who have information to make this available to police so that the perpetrators are not allowed to get away with murder," Nhleko said.

He said police would do everything in their power to solve the murders.
