Business unionism - union leaders fighting over business opportunities and perks - was one of the causes of the divisions in the South African labour movement‚ Thulas Nxesi‚ South African Communist Party deputy chair‚ said on Tuesday.

“Much of the recent turmoil within Cosatu affiliates is to be located in competing factions seeking to control these resources‚” he told delegates at the Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) Special National Congress.

“If you hold political office – you have no business being in business - especially where there is conflict of interest.”

“Comrades‚ step away from those tenders‚” Nxesi said.

“Reduce out-sourcing and tenders – particularly at local level – and where possible simply employ people directly‚ or work with cooperatives. This would be in areas such as security‚ maintenance of roads and buildings and school feeding schemes."
