The Eastern Cape government has challenged the opposition Democratic Alliance (DA) over budget allocations for road markings in the province‚ charging that the DA had issued incorrect information.

A R4.7-million contract was awarded to Rainbow Civils in May 2015 to conduct all road markings in the province‚ the Department of Roads and Public Works spokesperson‚ Mphumzi Zuzile‚ said in a statement.

Of the R4.7-million‚ more than R700m000 has been allocated to the Sarah Baartman Region alone‚ he said.

“On top of this‚ the region has also budgeted R1-million for road markings and signage. This is beside additional funds which are included in the road maintenance contracts.”

In a statement issued on Sunday‚ the DA spokesperson for roads and public works in the province‚ Vicky Knoetze‚ asserted that “a budget of only R150000 was made available for road signage for the entire Sarah Baartman District”.

The district includes the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro‚ Blue Crane‚ Koukamma‚ Ikwezi‚ Baviaans‚ Makana‚ Kouga‚ Sunday’s River‚ Camdeboo and Ndlambe areas.
