Umkhonto we Sizwe military veterans must be at the forefront in confronting those who threaten the unity of the ANC, the political party's deputy president Cyril Ramaphosa said in Boksburg.

"You will stand up against those who undermine the collective leadership of the ANC and those who seek to subvert the will of the people," Ramaphosa said in a speech prepared for delivery at the third general council of the Umkhonto we Sizwe Military Veterans Association (MKMVA).

He said the traditions of the MK would ensure that they would always strive to defend the ANC and its alliance's unity.

"As we have done before, we now look to you to guide the ANC and its allies."

Ramaphosa also said that the ANC would ensure that the welfare of former soldiers would feature prominently on the agenda of the ANC's National General Council – scheduled to take place next month.

"The ANC remains committed to ensuring that the benefits of democracy translate into a better life for all the veterans of our struggle and their dependents."

Ramaphosa proposed that, during their council meeting, the veterans discuss some of the key issues around the country's development.

"It will reaffirm the view that MKMVA is a critical and vital part of addressing the challenges South Africans face today."
