Thousands of ANC supporters, clad in yellow and green party T-shirts, took to the streets in the Pretoria CBD on Friday morning to march for unity, democracy and non-racialism.

The African National Congress's Fikile Mbalula, who is also the minister of sport, chanted and shouted from the back of an ANC-branded bakkie, "forward ANC, forward".

"Down with racism, down with racist journalists," said Water and Sanitation Minister Nomvula Mokonyane.

Fences were set up outside the Union Buildings to where the ANC supporters marched peacefully while singing and chanting.

"Today we are marching for unity and non-racism. We want the people of South Africa to stand together against racism, especially [with] what is happening at our universities," ANC member Bongani Masuku told a News24 reporter.

President Jacob Zuma, who was in a meeting with black business leaders, was expected to receive the memorandum.
