Francisca Smith, mother of Ndou's almost two-year-old son, briefly appeared in the Midrand Magistrate's Court yesterday where she was not asked to plead to a charge of the unlawful possession of an unlicensed firearm.

She was arrested on Monday outside the Midrand Police station where she had gone to hand in a safe containing a firearm that Ndou, one of the best boxers this country has produced, allegedly left at her home.

Saying she was troubled about keeping the safe at home, Smith and a friend went to the police station to try and get them to keep it instead. But she was arrested after police found that the firearm it contained was unlicensed.

She was released on a R1000 bail later that night.

Now the police are looking for the 33-year-old boxer. Ndou retired from the professional ring four years ago after collapsing during a bout in which Isaac Hlatshwayo thrashed him.

Ndou failed to revive his career last year when he lost the IBO welterweight title after losing to Lovemore Ndou.

At this stage, it is not known why Smith decided to go directly to the police to try and hand in the firearm.

Her lawyer, Makhi Nogaga, says her arrest has left him confused.

"I really do not understand why she was arrested in the first place and not Ndou, the alleged owner of the firearm," said Nogaga.

But prosecutor Ronnie Makhadi said the state was looking for Ndou to answer questions about the weapon.

"We still need to interview him and obtain statements from him. That is why the case had been postponed for further investigation," he said.

Smith is expected back in court later this month.
