Akani Simbine captured South Africa’s first medal of the World Student Games in Korea on Thursday when he won the 100m crown.

He clocked 9.97sec to set the Universiade record and equal the SA mark achieved by his University of Pretoria teammate‚ Henricho Bruintjies‚ just four days earlier.

Simbine finished ahead of Jamaica’s Ashani Brown (10.12) and Ramil Guliyev of Turkey (10.16).

Anaso Jobodwana won the 100m and 200m titles for SA at the last Universiade in Kazan‚ Russia‚ in 2013.

Ncinci Titi is on track for a podium finish in the 200m‚ with the semifinals and final scheduled for Friday.
