What is to become of Ajax without Foppe de Haan?

Will his successor, coaching greenhorn Maarten Stekelenburg, continue where evergreen De Haan left off - getting Ajax to play a pulsating, pleasing, passing game?

Ajax still have the va va voom.

They claimed the gigantic scalps of Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns in four days.

On Sunday they showed surgical precision in downing Downs 3-2.

That came on the back of a 2-1 midweek slaying of Amakhosi.

In the place of Daniels there's the cool, calm and collected presence of Thato Mokeke. He never buckles under pressure.

In four days he faced stern tests from three Bafana stars - Katlego Mphela, Bernard Parker and Lehlohonolo Majoro - and dealt with them. And he's only 22.

Then there is Khama Billiat, who has a burst of pace, sharp turns and lethal finishing.

Against Chiefs in both legs of the MTN8 semifinal he tried to be a hero.

Then someone must have reminded him the letter "i" does not appear in team, and against Chiefs last Wednesday, he played with and for his teammates. He did the same against Sundowns.

The Zimbabwe international need not try to be the new Serero. He should be content with being Billiat and he is brilliant in his own special way.

There's still plenty of life in Terror Fanteni. The old dog still has a mean bark and an even meaner bite.

Stekelenburg has kept them in the groove. In fourth position after five rounds, they are one of only four teams with double digits in their points tally - 10 out of a possible 15.

Ajax have proved a force with their three second-place finishes, ample proof that they are not in the PSL to make up the numbers.

Coming so near to winning the league is a clear indication that it is not the size of the dog - Ajax were founded only in 1999 - but the fight in the dog that matters, as Supersport United showed with their championship hat-trick.

Could this be the season when they shed the bridesmaid tag when it comes to capturing the elusive maiden Absa Premiership title?

The Tshwane teams have had their Pretoria Soccer League.

Pirates made it the Premier Soweto League last season and Chiefs fans will hope the log will look as it does now at the end of the season.

So life in Ikamva is progressing pretty well without the departed master coach, De Haan, and his amazing protege, Serero, who is now grazing in the greener pastures of Amsterdam.

Just so you know, De Haan is now with the national team of Tivalu - it is some place somewhere between Tonga and Tahiti and Kiribati and Vanuatu - which enjoys the same stature in soccer circles as, say, world-beaters Swaziland.
