AmaZulu FC are the Prince Mangosuthu Legacy Cup champions after they defeated Richards Bay FC 4-2 on penalties at Ulundi Stadium in KwaZulu-Natal on Saturday.

Richards Bay, who are preparing to make their maiden appearance in the DStv Premiership, and Usuthu played to a goalless draw in the final of the one day preseason tournament in the north of KwaZulu-Natal.

The two sides made it to the final after winning their respective semifinal matches earlier in the day via penalties.

The Natal Rich Boyz knocked out defending champions of the tournament Sundowns 4-2 in a penalty shoot-out while AmaZulu also needed penalties to move past Zululand XI, made up of local amateur players.

Usuthu had fielded a strong side against Zululand, featuring big names like Gabadinho Mhango, Dumisani Zuma, Augustine Kwem, Keagan Buchanan, Matarr Ceesay, Bongi Ntuli and local boy Thembela Sikhakhane.

Sundowns won the tourney in 2019 and had to wait for two years to defend their title due to Covid-19.

Sundowns and Richards Bay played to a 1-1 draw in regulation time with Neo Maema scoring for the DStv Premiership champions side while Simphiwe Mcineka equalised for Natal Rich Boyz in the closing stages of the game.

Sundowns fielded some of their best players such as Peter Shalulile, Andile Jali, Brian Onyango and Khuliso Mudau for the preseason tournament.

Richards Bay coach Pitso Dladla got a chance to give a run to some of his new players such as Abel Mabaso and Nkanyiso Zungu, who played off the bench.
