Australia's Qantas Airways wants to reach a commercial settlement with Rolls-Royce over last year's explosion of an engine during a Qantas flight, says the airline's chief executive.

Alan Joyce said the airline wanted an out-of-court settlement with Rolls-Royce.

He said he expected airlines to start raising fuel surcharges and fares as markets improved and to compensate for rising oil prices.

Qantas shares have fallen about 13% since the November 4 A380 incident over Indonesia but analysts attribute part of the decline to soaring fuel prices and the effect on travel of severe flooding in Queensland.
