Congress of the People (COPE) deputy president Mbhazima Shilowa said his party would push for a parliamentary vote on a proposed motion of no confidence in President Jacob Zuma.

This, Shilowa said, would give ANC MPs the opportunity to prove to South Africans just how much confidence they had in Zuma's leadership after revelations about his love child with the daughter of Local Organising Committee chairman Irvin Khoza.

Shilowa said COPE parliamentary leader Mvume Dandala would tell parliament of the party's intentions of tabling the motion tomorrow.

"He will use that opportunity to indicate that COPE intends to put a written motion forward on Thursday and explain why the party feels it is important that Zuma be removed as the head of state," Shilowa said.

He said aside from Zuma's love child, COPE would raise the issue of allegations levelled against communications minister Siphiwe Nyanda that he benefited from a corrupt Transnet deal through his security company.

But Democratic Alliance MP Ian Davidson said his party's support was more symbolic. He warned that COPE would be in for a rough ride in the bid to have the matter debated in the National Assembly.
