Children from Chris Hani Baragwanath’s Hospital, Forrest Town School for Cerebral Palsy, CHOC and Thingo Kids Pre-Primary, among other schools, were treated to fun day in the sun thanks to the Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital Trust.

Around 50 children joined Yvonne Chaka Chaka, Lebo M and Trust CEO Sibongile Mkhabela at the site where the Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital (NMCH) will be built in Parktown, Johannesburg, to celebrate the conclusion of Children’s Month.

The site where the hospital will be built was donated by Wits University in 2009.

"We are here today to honour what your great-grandfather Nelson Mandela promised you,” Mkhabela said to the kids. “If we love you, we will build a hospital for your needs.”

Mkhabela called on members of the public young and old to donate towards the cost of building the hospital.

The Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital will be a tertiary institution with 200 beds. The cost of building the hospital is estimated to be R1 billion.

“The next time you come here, you will be coming to the Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital,” Mkhabela said.
