Local DJ Roxxi's (Deshnie Govender) schedule is as hectic as ever following her win in the Best DJ -Africa category at the first Global Spin Awards in New York in November. The Johannesburg-based DJ, MC and producer says she'll be spending "literally one day in Durban" this month, when she visits her hometown for Christmas. She speaks to Siphiliselwe Mahkanya.

What did 2012 mean to you?

It was a year of change and growth. It has also given me the motivation to work harder in 2013. This year also brought about new experiences and friendships.

What was your proudest moment of the year?

Winning the Global Spin award in the Best DJ-Africa category. I have worked hard in the past 5 years, not only in my own music career but trying to push for the advancement of female DJs in Africa. This award has opened up so many opportunities for 2013.

Lesson(s) learnt in 2012?

On a positive note, I would say it's never too late to pursue your dreams. Every year, I work harder and smarter, and focus my energy on being the best I can be. This year taught me that we are our own worst enemy at times, and that we need to push forward with our goals and dreams.

Do you have any unique gift ideas this year?

I am a firm believer that flashy and bigger is not always better. Adding a personal touch to anything can really amp up a gift.

What's on your Christmas present wish list?

I would like an iPhone5, that's all.

Who would make it onto your Christmas dinner companion wish list?

Dream-wise, it would be Harvey from the TV show Suits. But if I had to choose real people, it would have to be Bonang Matheba as I just love her energy and Michelle Obama as she is a strong and resilient woman.

Do you think Christmas has become too commercial?

It depends on the individual. If you are true to yourself and can look past the commercialism of it all, then I have no issue.

What's the worst and best present you have ever received?

Worst present: A gift voucher. It just means the person was too lazy to get to know me. Best present: A car, which was a gift to myself. I think it's important to reward yourself.

What are your Christmas traditions?

We wake up, have a light breakfast and then a huge lunch. After lunch, we open presents and then go out for dinner.

Do you have plans for the holidays?

Work. The festive season is the busiest time of the year for us DJs.

Plans for 2013?

I want to focus on my mini-album release and taking my brand to another level. I am also looking forward to the Winter Music Conference in Miami .
