Former Archbishop of Cape Town Njongonkulu Ndungane, one of several leaders who nominated advocate Jeremy Gauntlett for the Constitutional Court, said yesterday he was disappointed by Gauntlett's exclusion from the shortlist: "I am disappointed because Jeremy is one of the greatest independent legal minds. He is the kind of person we want to serve in a body like the Constitutional Court."

Gauntlett was among five nominees interviewed by the Judicial Service Commission for a seat on the highest court on Friday, but failed to make the final list of four to be submitted to President Jacob Zuma. The four selected are high court judges Brian Spilg and Selby Baqwa, advocate Mlungisi Mahlangu and Supreme Court of Appeal judge Lebotsang Bosielo.

Gauntlett declined to comment yesterday. "I don't think there is any dignity in that," he said.
