An Indonesian college has secured the patent to produce a male contraceptive pill which is derived from a local plant.

According to GlobalPost.com, a plant called “gendarussa,” is being used to extract it's medicinal properties to manufacture a male birth control pill. The plant has been used by locals for years, whom have boiled it's leaves and drunk it just 30 minutes before sex.

It prevents pregnancy and clinical trials are underway. Currently, it has been found to be 99% effective and has few side effects in comparison to the female birth control pill which has side effects such as occasional spot bleeding, vomiting, headaches and nausea due to the synthetic hormones.

Participants in the clinical trials have reported weight gain and surprisingly, an increase in libido. According to the research team behind the pill,  it works by "weakening enzymes in sperm that allow them to squirm into a woman’s ovum." Men would also have to take it once a day, an hour before sex.
