Hunky Hollywood star Boris Kodjoe is in Cape Town shooting a German-produced series based on a book by South African crime fiction author Deon Meyer.

The 42-year-old, best known for his role in US drama series Soul Food and the comic parody Real Husbands of Hollywood, arrived in the country on his birthday, March 8, and seems to be having a blast.

He has tweeted and posted images about his experiences in the city, including jogging at Green Point, wining and dining in Camps Bay, shark cage diving, playing golf and visiting the V&A Waterfront.

"Today I visited Madiba at the Waterfront. Thank you Warren for a great tour," tweeted the actor on Wednesday, with a picture of himself with a statue of Nelson Mandela.

If he is not out and about with his two children, the actor is reportedly on set for the series Dead Before Dying, directed by Hungarian-born Peter Ladkani.

The series presents a post-apartheid story about police captain Mat Joubert - played by Norwegian actor Trond Espen Seim - who, after losing his wife, finds himself in a web of trouble and is forced to change when a new commanding officer is appointed.

Kodjoe is set to play the "resident evil" role of Sanct Snook.

According to the author's website, filming started on Monday.

Other international cast members include Germany's Axel Milberg, Poland's Marcin Dorocinski and Russian-born Isolda Dychauk.

The series also features several local actors, including Arnold Vosloo, Colin Moss, David Butler, Johnny Pienaar, Bart Fouche, André Jacobs, Alex McGregor, Danny Keogh, Deon Lotz and Treasure Tshabalala.

"I am deeply honoured, and very excited," wrote Meyer on his website.

Multiple award-winning Meyer met with the two leading stars last Thursday at a dinner that was also attended by Top Billing's Ursula Chikane and Tourism Minister Derek Hanekom. Meyer also tweeted: "Real pleasure to meet @BorisKodjoe and #TrondEspenSeim The Mat Joubert series is going to be awesome."

Hanekom wrote on Twitter: "Had dinner with Boris last night. A most impressive man! Filming in Cape Town. Proud to have the team here!"
