1. FACELESS MODELS

Models in knitted facemasks paraded down the runway at the Chulaap Autumn/Winter show at SA Menswear Week. Designer Chu Suwannapha told Sunday Times the idea behind these quirky accessories was "to draw attention to the prints and the outfits instead of the models' expressions". His strategy backfired somewhat - although the clothes were striking, it was the masks that became a major talking point.

2. FAST FOOD AND FASHION COLLIDE

Designer Gert-Johan Coetzee created a buzz when he revealed his collaboration with McDonald’s in celebration of the Big Mac’s 50th birthday at SA Fashion Week. With separates in the brand's signature red and yellow, and tees emblazoned with the golden arches, the collection was not to everyone's taste. That said, actress Nomzamo Mbatha's impromptu dance on the runway as she closed the show was a real crowd-pleaser.

3. BAG BALLET

Ever wonder what would be the best way to showcase bags on the runway? Designer Inga Gubeka of Inga Atelier had the answer. Instead of displaying hers on a stall at the trade show during SA Fashion Week, she put on a magnificently choreographed catwalk performance piece. The audience was enthralled. Total genius!

4. THE MORE TALENT THE MERRIER

The Woolworths Style By SA show is always a highlight of SA Fashion Week as it features work by some of the country's most talented designers (think Rich Mnisi, Thebe Magugu and Mmuso Maxwell). With exciting designs and electrifying palettes, the Style By SA A/W 2019 collection didn't disappoint.

5. ASIAN MEETS AFRICA

This year's African Fashion International Joburg Fashion Week had an Afro-Asia theme - and seasoned designer Marianne Fassler of Leopard Frock nailed it. She sent models down the runway in breathtakingly beautiful garments which drew inspiration from both continents.

6. MODEST FASHION MAKES WAVES

This year saw the inaugural Brics (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) show take place at SA Fashion Week. Our favourite collection was by Indian brand Antar-Agni. It put a welcome stamp of approval on the trend towards wearing more modest, less skin-revealing clothes. The silhouettes were loose, with soft flowing fabrics in muted tones.

7. CLUELESS REVIVAL
Designer Siyethemba Duma of Matte Nolim channelled the '90s for his S/S19 collection at African Fashion International Joburg Fashion Week. Featuring miniskirts in bright neons and cropped jackets, it made thirtysomethings think fondly of Cher and Dee's wardrobes in the iconic 1995 movie Clueless.
