A Mannenberg teenager was engulfed by a rip current as he swam as part of a school tour to Camps Bay yesterday.

While the group of 23 was enjoying a swim on a windy Cape Town day, the teenager – whose identity has yet to be released – got into difficulty and disappeared beneath the surf.

The National Sea Rescue Institute's Bakoven station commander Bruce Davidson said that despite an extensive air, sea and shore search, there was no sign of the missing teenager and he was presumed to have drowned.

"As part of an ongoing search rescue swimmers conducted sweeping line searches free diving in the surf zone and police divers conducted scuba dive searches in the area," he said.
