A man has been convicted of two life sentences and 27 years imprisonment at the  Butterworth Regional Magistrate Court in the Eastern Cape after he was found guilty on seven counts of rape. 

In a statement Butterworth police spokesperson Captain Jackson  Manatha said the 28-year-old  Thokozani Sewendu committed the rapes between 2011 and 2013 in the Dutywa and Willowvale districts.

"He was found guilty on seven counts of rape. He targeted mostly school girls who were staying alone and would accost them during the nights," the statement said. Manatha said in some instances he would target school girls who were coming from school music competitions. "He was also attacking and raping the school girls who were coming from night studies."

Police said some of his victims managed to identify him while in some cases he was linked with DNA test. The victims of the accused were aged between 16 and 24 years.

Sewendu was traced and arrested by the Butterworth Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit.
