Organisers of the highly-anticipated South African Music Awards (Samas) plan to keep fans guessing a little longer about who is in the running for awards in the top five categories with a new nominees strategy. 

It was revealed at a swanky nominees announcement party in Boksburg on Thursday night that nominees for Male Artist of the Year, Female Artist of the Year, Duo/Group of the Year, Newcomer of the Year and Album of the Year will only be revealed in May.

Record of The Year nominees will be announced on Live AMP on Friday night. 

Meanwhile, Mafikizolo, Mi Casa and Simphiwe Dana lead the pack with three nods each so far. 

Mafikizolo walked away with nominations for Best Afro Pop Album, Best Engineered Album and Best Produced Album, while Mi Casa went home with nods for Best Dance Album, Best Produced Album and Best Engineered Album.

Songstress Simphiwe Dana's album Simphiwe scored her nods in the Best Live Audiovisual, Best Jazz Album and Best African Artist categories. 

Distruction Boyz' hit track Omunye got nods for Best Collaboration and Best Engineered Album. 

Other big hitters in the running for the coveted awards are Riky Rick, Kwesta, Prince Kaybee and Shekinah. 

The late Robbie Malinga, who died on Christmas Day last year after a battle with pancreatic cancer, also got a nomination in the Best Afro Pop Album category. 

All roads will lead to Sun City where the awards will take place on June 2.
