Reyka actress Kim Engelbrecht has opened up about her Emmy nomination and being seen by her international peers.

Chatting about her excitement on 5FM’s 5 Drive, Kim said the international nod took her by surprise.

“I  was at home and I had no idea that Reyka had been put forward for nomination for an international Emmy. I had no idea the production company had gone that far. I obviously knew we were part of something special when were making the show, during Covid-19. The show came out in 2021 and we made the show during Covid-19 in 2020. So this is the cherry on top.”

Kim said she didn't get involved in the project with awards or recognition in mind but is ecstatic that their work is being recognised.

She is happy that the world is catching on to how much versatility SA has in telling stories, saying she is excited that the international stage is more accessible.

Kim got a nod at the 2022 Emmy Awards in the Best Actress category for her role in the Showmax crime drama Reyka.

The actress, who has appeared in shows such as Raised By Wolves and The Flash, is the fifth African actress to be nominated for the international Emmy.

In 2021, Egyptian actress Menna Shalabi was nominated for her role in Every Week has a Friday. In 2017 and 2018, Thuso Mbedu was nominated for her part in Is’thunzi. Lerato Mvelase and Brenda Ngxoli were nominated in 2010 and 2007 respectively for Home Affairs.

“This nomination means much more than you could imagine,” said Kim in a statement shared with TshisaLIVE.

“This serves as validation to our Reyka team that hard work and commitment does not go unnoticed. Congratulations team Reyka.

“I saw a quote this morning: ‘You can get to where you want to from where you are.' Thank you to the international Emmys for the incredible nomination. Thank you for the opportunity to share our show with the world. SA has so many stories to tell.”
