WATCH | Fire rages in Durban city centre, residents escape
Residents of a flat in central Durban, in the precinct of the Juma Masjid mosque, managed to escape a raging fire that ripped through the building on Monday.
Traffic came to a standstill in the vicinity of the scene on Denis Hurley Street as emergency services battled to contain the fire.
It is understood that five or six flats have been damaged.
AV Mohamed, chairperson of Juma Masjid Trust, told TimesLIVE that there were no injuries and that residents had been safely evacuated.
Paramedic Garrith Jamieson said emergency workers were in attendance while firefighters battled big flames.
“It is reported that there are multiple patients with smoke inhalation,” he said.
