1,200 new Covid-19 cases, 36 deaths recorded in 24 hours

SA recorded 1,247 new Covid-19 cases in the past 24 hours, taking the national total of infections to 738,525.

Health minister Dr Zweli Mkhize released the figures on Monday night.

Pfizer, BioNTech say their Covid-19 vaccine is more than 90% effective

Pfizer Inc on Monday said its experimental vaccine was more than 90% effective in preventing Covid-19, based on initial data from a large study - a major victory in the fight against a pandemic that has killed over 1 million people, roiled the world's economy and upended daily life.

Pfizer and German partner BioNTech SE are the first drugmakers to show successful data from a large-scale clinical trial of a coronavirus vaccine.

Swiss report 17,309 new coronavirus cases over three days

Coronavirus infections rose by 17,309 cases since Friday, data from Swiss health authorities showed on Monday.

Total confirmed cases in Switzerland and neighbouring principality Liechtenstein increased to 229,222 and the death toll rose by 169 to 2,576.

Hospitalisations swelled by 536 to 9,205 as the government deployed army personnel to help the hard-pressed health care system cope with the surge in admissions.

Worldwide coronavirus cases cross 50.35 million, death toll at 1,255,087

More than 50.35 million people have been reported to be infected by the novel coronavirus globally and 1,255,087​ have died, according to a Reuters tally.

Infections have been reported in more than 210 countries and territories since the first cases were identified in China in December 2019.

Russia reports record high of 21,798 new coronavirus cases

Russia reported a record high of 21,798 new coronavirus infections on Monday, including 6,897 in the capital Moscow, bringing the national tally to 1,796,132.

Authorities also reported 256 coronavirus-related deaths in the last 24 hours, taking the official death toll to 30,793.

Don't undo what we've achieved: Ramaphosa's plea on Covid-19

The greatest vigilance is required from all of us to keep the coronavirus at bay, President Cyril Ramaphosa said on Monday as he called on South Africans to be responsible in helping combat the spread of Covid-19.

With the festive season approaching, and after eight months of fighting the coronavirus, Ramaphosa said it is vital “we do not become the architects of our own undoing”'

“A resurgence at any scale will not just dramatically reverse our health gains, it will choke the green shoots of economic recovery that have emerged, and take us back from spring to winter,” the president said in his weekly newsletter.

Infineon forecasts strong rebound in year ahead from coronavirus slump

German chipmaker Infineon forecast that revenue would grow by nearly 23% in the year ahead as it reported fiscal fourth quarter results on Monday that were in line with analyst estimates.

The Munich-based chipmaker was forced to abandon guidance in March as the coronavirus hit - just before its $10 billion acquisition of U.S. Cypress Technologies closed - but has since staged a recovery led by China and the autos sector.
