Which used EV is best for towing?

Electric vehicles (EVs) are gaining popularity in South Africa. Traditionally they’ve been sought after as city cars — but what if you’re looking to acquire an EV that can be used for towing?

According to AutoTrader CEO George Mienie, there is growing consumer interest in EVs.

“While initial adoption of EVs was slow in South Africa — largely because of the purchase price of these vehicles — consumers are definitely warming to the concept of EV ownership,” he said.

“The 2023 AutoTrader Mid-Year Industry Report reveals electric vehicles have seen a 50.6% increase in advert views compared to 16.1% for petrol advert views. In 2022, the South African used car market also saw a 43% increase in EV sales.”

South Africans are, however, known for being lovers of the outdoors, which often means they need a vehicle is capable of towing. The driving force behind EVs’ stunningly quick acceleration is instant torque, something fuel-powered cars don’t have, making EVs a surprisingly great towing candidate.

So which EVs best tick this box and have the best towing capability?

The Volvo XC40 — the smallest of Volvo's XC range of compact luxury crossover SUVs — is a great choice. The pure electric XC40 Recharge twin has a maximum towing capacity (braked) of 1,800kg. This spacious five-door SUV is listed on AutoTrader for an average price of R1,177,234, with an average mileage of 6,948km and with an average year of registration of 2022. The XC40 internal combustion engine (ICE) counterpart has a slightly higher towing capacity of 2,100kg (braked). 

Another great option is the Audi e-tron, which was the first car designed by Audi from the ground up as a pure EV. It is listed on AutoTrader for an average price of R1,799,798, with an average mileage of 8,545km and an average year of registration of 2022. It has a luxurious interior and lots of great tech features. Its maximum towing capacity (braked) of 1,800kg is the feature most likely to impress lovers of the great outdoors.

Finally, there’s another EV that was also the first ground-up dedicated EV in its stable. We are referring to the BMW iX, which has a super impressive towing capacity (braked) of 2,500 kg, allowing lots of room for all the added holiday toys and accessories. It is listed on AutoTrader for an average price of R1,683,577, with an average mileage of 14,141km and an average year of registration of 2022. With that towing capacity, it should be right at the top of the list for any outdoor lover wanting to acquire an EV.

Although the instant torque of EVs make them a desirable towing companion, drivers are cautioned to keep a close eye on their range as adding additional weight is likely to deplete the range of your EV when towing for prolonged periods.
