DJ Sbu is disappointed at the conduct of police VIP protection unit members who viciously assaulted motorists in Johannesburg.

A video clip of the assault went viral on social media on Monday afternoon.

The video shows the members of the VIP unit assaulting three seemingly helpless and unarmed men who were occupants of a VW Polo.

DJ Sbu shared his views on his YouTube platform.

“There is no need to harass citizens, beating them up, unless [y]our lives were in danger or were at a threat.”

The media personality said he understood the alertness and fear of those driving cash-in-transit vehicles, but in this incident the VIP protection unit members' lives were not under threat.

“Wa ba bona ke bana batho bale [You can see that it's kids], maybe they've driven nonsense but still you don't reprimand them by getting them out of the car and beating them up like that. Even if they were disrespectful, I don't think that's the type of excessive force we should practise on ordinary citizens that are unarmed, so I'm disappointed there. It's sad, but we are encouraging our youth to be progressive, work hard, not be criminals and to abide by rules that govern the country.”

TimesLIVE reported the three occupants of a VW Polo are South African National Defence Force members

The South African National Defence Union (Sandu) told the publication the men gave them a detailed account of what happened.

Sandu national secretary Pikkie Greeff said the victims were en route from Johannesburg to Pretoria.

“The victims’ vehicle was boxed in by more SUVs and forced, in formation, to the left side of the N1 highway. The occupants of the SUVs exited their vehicles, surrounded the victims’ vehicle and attempted to smash the windscreen.

“Upon not being successful, the assailants proceeded to smash the back window and assault the occupants,” Greeff said.
