The workers, who are part of the Shosholoza-Meyl's general operations staff, will hand over a petition to Transnet about its refusal to allow mainline trains from the Passenger Rail Agency of SA (Prasa) to use its rail lines, provincial general secretary Zenzo Mahlangu said.

The petition was drafted after Transnet's action allegedly "rendered redundant" all employees of Prasa's Shosholoza-Meyl, said Mahlangu.

"Under the circumstances, we cannot tell workers to stay at home in protest because that will give the employer an opportunity to render them unemployed," he said.

The march was expected to start at Library Gardens.
