Q: I enjoy sex and do become "excited" but I seem to have an issue with dryness. My husband thinks I am faking. What can I do?

A: While vaginal lubrication usually occurs naturally when a person is aroused, some people do not produce enough natural lubricant to have enjoyable sex.

Some of the common causes of a temporary decrease in natural lubrication include the side-effects of medications used to treat a runny nose or flu (these are designed to dry up the mucous membranes in the nasal cavity, but can have effects elsewhere in the body); allergy treatments containing antihistamines; asthma medications; and chemicals in soap, other hygiene products, dyes and perfumes.

Hormonal changes related to childbirth and cancer therapies could also have an effect.

In the absence of psychological and emotional factors such as stress, anxiety or trauma, it may be worthwhile exploring some of the aforementioned causes.

If you require additional lubrication, artificial water-based or silicone-based products may be applied. This is a great option to reduce friction and irritation and to enhance pleasure.

Avoid products like petroleum jelly and other oil-based products because they can cause latex in condoms to break down and lead to leaks. There are also sex-toy-specific lubricants that can be used together with a toy.
