Death toll in KZN truck and bakkie crash climbs to 21

The death toll in a collision between a truck and a bakkie transporting children on the N2 between Pongola and Itshelejuba on Friday afternoon has risen to 21. 

KwaZulu-Natal emergency medical services spokesperson Robert Mckenzie initially said eight children and two adults had died but said on Friday night the death toll had risen to 21.

He said two adults and 19 children had died.

Mckenzie said the children were primary school pupils aged between five and 12 who were being transported home from school. 

“The cause of the crash is not yet known, but will be investigated by police.”
