History repeated itself at a cellphone tower in KwaMashu when two security guards were shot dead while escorting technicians on Thursday afternoon.

In January, two Dragon Protection Services security guards were killed at the same location while escorting technicians.

KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Col Robert Netshiunda on Thursday said the two guards were ambushed and fatally wounded at A Section, KwaMashu.

“Reports indicate that the guards were escorting technicians who were due to work on a cellphone tower when they were accosted by the suspects, who fired several shots at them.”

Netshiunda said the victims were declared dead at the scene and the suspects allegedly fled on foot with the victims' firearms. “A manhunt is under way,” he said.

Cellphone towers have become targets for syndicates seeking batteries and generators, and the construction mafia.
