Learning this lingo will come in handy next time you're shopping for a bottle of olive oil.

1. What is extra virgin olive oil?

It is the oil extracted mechanically from ripe, fresh olives without additives or solvents.

2. How can I be sure of olive oil quality?

To be assured of top quality buy local and look out for extra virgin olive oils that carry the SA Olive seal, which guarantees quality and freshness. Store olive oil in a dark cupboard (not in the fridge) and use within 1-2 years.

3. What is pomace olive oil?

The cheapest olive oil, made using the leftover mashed skins and pips. It is extracted using solvents and heat. In some countries pomace oil is only sold for industrial use.

4. What is "light" olive oil?

Oil refined by the addition of artificial antioxidants which remove aroma, flavour and all the natural antioxidants.
