Malcolm X, three policemen in court for corruption after R580,000 bribe claim

Self-proclaimed philanthropist Malcolm X and three police officers appeared in the Alexandra magistrate’s court on Monday on two counts of corruption, alternatively extortion. 

Malcolm X, 57, Desmond Campbell Kekana, 52, James Mpho Sekhaolela, 45, and Raymond Mphuwa Mokaile, 38, are alleged to have participated in corrupt activities when they solicited gratification of R580,000 from a complainant to avoid arrest.  

“It is alleged that three officials went to the complainant's residence to inquire about her passport and thereafter alleged it contained fraudulent immigration stamps,” the National Prosecuting Authority and the Hawks said in a joint statement. 

The officers later arrested her and during questioning the trio allegedly demanded R2m for her release.  

“Malcolm X was the alleged middleman in facilitating the payment. In enticing the family, threats were made about arresting her son as well.” 

The complainant gave in and R580,000 was agreed to and the complainant was released.  

The complainant then reported a case of corruption to the Hawks and the four were arrested on Sunday. 

“The case was postponed until Thursday for a formal bail application and the four accused were remanded.”
