Friends and family members of Siya Sesimani recently donned white and blue when gathering at Westpark Cemetery in Johannesburg to commemorate his life as they unveiled his tombstone.
Siyanda died aged 31 on March 11 2022 after spending weeks in hospital in a coma after he was beaten during a home invasion. His case remains under investigation.
After the ceremony at his grave, which is in between those of actor Patrick Shai and kwaito star Magesh, the family gathered at Siyanda's home to share fond memories of the late star over lunch.
“As we entered the function, seeing his pictures and being faced with the fact that we were doing an unveiling for him, I am still in denial. I couldn't hold it. Going to the grave was also another thing,” Siyanda's mother Thando Nombewu told TshisaLIVE.
Thando said while she is happy to “go all out” to celebrate her son's life, she is faced with the reality of his daughter who is left with many questions.
“It hasn't been an easy journey because Siyanda was a family person. It's not easy answering his daughter's questions. She said everything was perfect but she didn't like that we didn't find the tsotsis who killed her father.”
Police have been investigating Siyanda's death, but Thando said they've resorted to putting their trust in God that his killers will be apprehended.
“We are not happy. We do not know how far the case is, we are just praying for justice to be served. We decided to let them do their job because it became strenuous to keep following up with the police. We are trusting God because we didn't hear anything so far. We are waiting patiently.”
Thando plans to open a preschool at her home called Siyanda's Angels in his honour and to preserve his legacy.
The inconsolable mother said they are just waiting for the late actors' estate to be finalised and they will get the crèche up and running.
