PSL relegation battle goes down to the wire as Arrows beat Cosmos

12 May 2016 - 11:16 By Marc Strydom

Missing star striker Charlton Mashumba‚ Jomo Cosmos never had the firepower to truly trouble Lamontville Golden Arrows‚ who enjoyed the freedom to edge a 1-0 advantage over their relegation-threatened opponents.Cosmos (on 25 points) now face Maritzburg United (24 points) - who edged from last into second-last place on Wednesday night with a 1-0 home win against Ajax Cape Town - in one of the biggest relegation match-ups in recent memory in the teams’ final game in Potchefstroom on Saturday‚ May 21.Promoted Cosmos needed a victory to ensure their survival. Wednesday night’s result means the relegation battle between Cosmos‚ Maritzburg United and last-placed Pretoria University (22 points) is going down to the wire. Tuks’ last game is against Arrows in Pretoria. With Mashumba having picked up an injury after scoring the winner in Ezenkosi’s 1-0 win against then second-last Pretoria University two matches previously‚ Jomo Sono’s team had been left without much-needed punch up front.Arrows‚ generally on the ascendancy as they pushed for a victory that could be crucial in earning Clinton Larsen’s team a top-eight place‚ produced a winner through defensives stalwart Musa Bilankulu’s volley a minute into first-half injury time. Both sides had their share of key injuries‚ and in Arrows’ case‚ tragedy. The Durban side’s slippery forward Kudakwashe Mahachi’s four-year-old daughter reportedly died and he had leave to go back to Zimbabwe. Arrows were missing another key forward in Rodney Ramagalela. But there is a reason fellow promoted side Arrows‚ last season’s First Division champions‚ came into Wednesday night in ninth place to Cosmos’s 14th. Abafana Bes’thende brought a talented team to the PSL‚ and strengthened it‚ so enough to have depth. Cosmos less so.On homeground Arrows could not quite run Ezenkosi ragged‚ but did have enough supereriority to have justified a single-goal win.Ezenkosi’s attacking pair in Mashumba’s absence of Linda Mntambo and Mxolisi Macuphu‚ with two league goals between them‚ seemed unlikely to produce a goal.On the half-hour Cosmos forward Linda Mntambo struck the cross bar with a shot from range.Just after the PA announced two minutes of injury time‚ an Arrows corner was played short to right-back Siyabonga Dube‚ whose cross was looped by a deflection into the path of Bilankulu‚ the centre-back volleying in.Near the end Arrows’ Namibian winger Deon Hotto tricked his way past Pentjie Zulu on the right and forced a save from the Cosmos keeper.- TMG Digital..
