At least two people were killed and 15 wounded in a suicide bomb attack by Islamist extremists in Algeria.

One of the attackers blew himself up in a car outside a police station in Bordj Menaiel, 70 kilometres east of the capital Algiers, according to a report on the El Watan newspaper's website.

A policeman was killed when he tried to prevent a second attacker on a motorcycle from striking, El Watan said, quoting sources at the scene.

A city official and the two attackers were also reported killed.

Earlier this week, two people were killed in an attack in Boumerdes, 50 kilometres east of Algiers.

Ongoing protests calling for political and social change have weakened the government of President Abdelaziz Bouteflika.

Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb originates in Algeria, where it was known as the Salafist Group for Preaching and Combat.
