Smith & Nephew's new board members are well up for it

Medical equipment company Smith & Nephew has announced two appointments to the board.

Judith Horne is director of the advanced wound management division and Raymond Buthelezi has been appointed director of business development, state and Africa export markets.

Besides being a pharmacist, Horne is a senior marketing and sales executive and has extensive experience in both the medical device and pharmaceutical industries. Among her qualifications are a BSc in pharmacy from Rhodes University and an MBA from Edinburgh Business School, Heriot-Watt University, in Scotland.

Buthelezi joined Smith & Nephew in 2003 as a product manager. In July 2004, he was promoted to product group manager, orthopaedic trauma. In March 2005, he was seconded for a year to Smith & Nephew's empowerment joint venture company, Icembe Medical, where he is a non-executive director.

Buthelezi holds a BSc (Hons), a higher diploma in education and an MBA. He began his working life as acting deputy principal of Ongoye High School in KwaZulu-Natal, teaching maths and science.

Three Cities Hotels has appointed Mike Lambert as CEO. He takes over from Russell Stevens, who will remain chairman.

Lambert was recruited in 2004 as chief operating officer of uShaka Marine World for the City of Durban - Three Cities had won the contract to complete and manage the development.

"We have these past 18 months had to complete a major reshuffle in senior management and continue to navigate a very challenging period, especially in the leisure and tourism sector," said Stevens.

Sanlam Personal Finance (SPF) has appointed Anton Gildenhuys chief executive of SPF Actuarial. Gildenhuys, a qualified actuary, previously held the position of chief executive of SPF's strategic business development division.

Gildenhuys was a Sanlam bursary student and joined in January 1997 as a consultant at its financial management division. He was subsequently appointed to the positions of valuations actuary, development actuary, head of product development and chief executive of strategic business development.
