By 6pm‚ the DA had 49.49% of the votes‚ the ANC 39.25% and EFF 4.87%. DA mayoral candidate Athol Trollip said the discovery was “predictable”.“The ANC is panicking‚ it’s the same old movie‚” he said.ANC provincial deputy chairman Sakhumzi Somyo said: “We are surprised because ballot papers are supposed to be kept in a place of safety and secured. Now that we hear stories about the ballot papers that have been found near the counting station is a shock to us. We have asked our team at Nelson Mandela Bay to find out what happened and give us explanation. It will depend on what explanation we get‚ if indeed it needs a follow up we will do so.”EFF regional co-ordinator Zilindile Vena said the police had to be called in if there was any criminal element involved.“We will not play in the hands of the ANC. They are scared of losing the metro and now they are doing this. This is just a scam by the ANC‚ they don’t want to accept the results and now they are creating mayhem‚” Vena said. How did your ward/city vote? The box was torn while the people were packing it to archive‚” Bacela said. When asked if the discovery of the ballots compromised the Electoral Commission’s credibility‚ Bacela agreed that it should not have been left in an exposed area‚ but said it would not affect results.“I don’t think there is any question about the credibility of the results. Any ballot that is here has been counted‚ they ... fell out of the box when the people were packing them.“...Any ballot paper that has been exposed is regarded as serious‚” he said.Bacela said the ballots would be packed and moved to a warehouse.* An incident of ballot boxes dumped in another area of the city was also investigated by electoral officials‚ who said it was litter‚ as these had been empty and unused...
