Robben Island voters missed the boat

05 August 2016 - 21:10 By Ernest Mabuza

The voting station on Robben Island was expected to be the first in the Western Cape to release its results. This was dependent on about 100 people casting their votes by 4:30pm on Wednesday‚ so that ballot boxes could be loaded on to the last ferry to the mainland. But the ballots missed the boat because some voters missed that deadline.Robben Island is part of ward 54‚ which includes Bantry Bay‚ Clifton‚ Green Point and Sea Point. The boxes were transported to Cape Town on Thursday to be counted. The ANC took the island with 56 votes‚ while the Democratic Alliance and the Democratic Independent Party got 16 votes each. This meant the ANC obtained 55.45% of the vote‚ up from 52.13% in the 2011 local government elections. In the 2011 elections‚ Robben Island had 127 voters and was the only polling station in the ward where the ANC obtained a majority. The DA won the ward in this year with 19 512 votes or 93.61%. This is up from the 91.43% it obtained in 2011.How did your ward/city vote? Click here for the #ElectionResults:http://bit.ly/2apwZKU..
