Kimmy wows 'em at Andre Rieu's Sun City bash

MAESTRO: Andre Rieu in concert at Sun City Picture: LEBOHANG MASHILOANE

Former Cape Town soprano Nokrismesi "Kimmy" Skota took centre stage at Sun City's Superbowl during one of her mentor, Dutch violinist Andre Rieu's, three shows this past weekend.

Since impressing the 61-year-old during his previous South African tour with a rendition of the classic Ave Maria, Skota, referred to by Rieu as a "black diamond", has now toured with the violinist and composer and his Johann Strauss orchestra for a year.

She recently moved to the Dutch capital, Amsterdam, after securing a new one-year deal with Rieu.

Rieu played to three sold-out houses on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Even when he was not playing, the virtuoso violinist captivated the crowd with his sense of humour. After a break, he refused to start playing as latecomers streamed back into the theatre. He stood shaking his head, as late arrivals were shamed with their faces on two big screens. He said: "Is this normal at Sun City?"

Skota received a standing ovation for her rendition of Song of Vilja.
