KWAITO may have been born in SA, but it was a Namibian artist who scooped the Most Gifted Kwaito Video Artist title at the Channel O music video awards on Friday - the third time a Namibian has won it in the five-year history of the awards.

Shortly after scooping the award at the Sandton Convention Centre, The Dogg - real name Martin Morocky - tweeted: "We won. We made it. The award is for Namibia. Nobody can stop Mshasho ... I love you."

The multi-award-winning musician and producer, who owns his own record label, Mshasho Productions, has previously performed on stage with a number of South African artists including Malaika and Mafikizolo.

The ceremony on Friday, presented by Channel O's video jockey Dineo Moeketsi and Nigerian musician Banky W, attracted artists from across the continent.

South African artists scooped five awards:

  • Most Gifted Female Video - Afro-Jazz artist Lira for her album Phakade;
  • Most Gifted Afro-Pop Artist - Theo Kgosinkwe for his single Ukhona;
  • Most Gifted Hip Hop Video Artist - AKA for the single Victory Lap;
  • Most Gifted African Southern Video Artist - house group Liquideep for their single Settle for Less; and
  • Most Gifted Video of the Year - Zakes Bantwini for the single Wasting My Time.

Nigerian artist D'banj walked away with the Special Recognition Award for a career that represents the "African dream", according to a Channel O statement. He has a recording deal with US hip- hop artist Kanye West.
