Youth Jazz Festival

Where & when: Artscape, June 2

Artscape's Youth Jazz Festival celebrates its 10th year with seven soloists, aged 17 to 24, who auditioned to perform for this prestigious occasion. It's directed and conducted by legendary jazz trumpeter, educator and performing artist Ian Smith, who is joined by Kevin Gibson (drums), Andrew Ford (piano) and Wesley Rustin (double bass) to form a jazz ensemble to accompany the soloists. The talented performers this year include vocalists, a pianist, a bassist, a saxophonist and a guitarist. - Karen Rutter

Sfiso Ka-Mkame: Virgins and Graces

Where & when: The African Art Centre, until June 12

Sfiso Ka-Mkame's reputation was entrenched in 1988 when the South African National Gallery in Cape Town purchased his Letters to God drawing series for their permanent collection. Shortly thereafter the Tatham Art Gallery in Pietermaritzburg purchased the series Letters for my Child. In his new exhibition, Virgins and Graces, the artist has once again made use of oil pastels to illustrate his concept of African women. - Shelley Seid

About 2500 people attended the opening of this retrospective, which celebrates the 21st birthday of the Artist Proof Studio in Newtown, and shows the interest in this remarkable training ground. Work by former and current Artist Proof artists is on display along with work by collaborating artists includingWilliam Kentridge and Diane Victor.- Lesley Stones
