It’s been four years since his recording label, 999 Music, won an award and the 'King of Kwaito' seemingly subscribes to the saying “desperate times call for desperate measures” and decided to award a cow to a lucky fan among those who vote for the hit song Summa Ya Masumma, which he recorded under 999 Music.

Mafokate said winning a Metro FM Award would mean the world to him and his company.

Asked why the desperation and why a cow, Mafokate told Daily Sun on Thursday that: “The only thing we need as people is food. You can give people money but that won’t empower them. So I want to give them something they can actually enjoy.”

“The album we released represents our comeback as a label."

999 Music has been nominated for Best Compilation Album while one of his artists, Cici, has been nominated for Best R&B Single. The prize money is R100,000 in each category.

SABC Spokesperson Kaizer Kganyago said there is nothing untoward about Mafokate's Awards campaign.

“The Station has encouraged all the Metro FM Music Awards nominees to embark on campaigns that will encourage their fans to vote for them. There are no set restrictions on what form should the campaigns to galvanise support for the nominees be, except that one cellphone number is restricted to vote up to 500 times per category," Kganyago told this website in an email on Thursday.
