The Zulu family share their intimate moments at Gugu's memorial

The family of Gugu Zulu on Tuesday shared intimate memories that they had with the rally car driver.

Friends and family have gathered at the Kyalami Race Track in Johannesburg to pay tribute to 'the fastest brother in Africa.'

Zulu's sister Liyanda described how her brother was always her number one, saying he didn't filter much when it came to her.

"He had my back. I'm not going to give any details 'cause mom is still here."

"I have the best brother," she went on to add.

Gugu's mother, Puleng described how when her son was just six-years-old he said he wanted to be a driver.

"I want to give thanks to God for making me a vessel for which this angel was in my life."

She said that when he was young and he said he wanted to be a driver, she thought taxi driver, bus driver, truck driver. "I didn't know what racing was. He just said: 'no mom, a driver.'"

Gugu's father Peter had his sister read a note on behalf of him where he echoed sentiments that Gugu was a good son.

"To me Gugu is the best story ever told."

Zulu died while climbing Mount Kilimanjaro last week. He was part of a Trek4Mandela expedition which aimed to raise funds for sanitary pads for schoolgirls who cannot afford them.

Peter Mabaso, the expedition's project leader, said that so far 3.6millions pads have been collected.
