Rapper Okmalumkoolkat has released his first single from his highly anticipated album Mlazi Milano - his first major solo release since returning from a month-long stay in a Tasmanian jail after being found guilty on charges of indecent assault and assault with indecent intent.

The rapper, whose real name is Smiso Zwane, has kept his head down and focused on music since serving one month of a six-month sentence.

With plans to drop an album in the next few months, the rapper has been hard at work in studio and took to social media on Wednesday to release the first single off the upcoming album, a track called Ntwana Yam'.

The single immediately made waves on social media, trending on Twitter for much of the night following its release.

Fans were especially surprised at the rapper's use of a sample from AKA's Composure, which claimed that new artists had "stole" their "whole style from 'Malumkoolkat."

The rapper took to Instagram following the release to share a video of himself working on the track in studio.

*This story has been amended to clarify the charges against Okmalumkoolkat. An earlier version said he had been found guilty of sexual assault. This is incorrect. He was found guilty of indecent assault and assault with indecent intent.
