DJ Black Coffee has become the latest celebrity to slam police brutality on university campuses, after dramatic encounters played out between police and fees must fall protesters at Wits on Tuesday.

The nation watched in horror as police clashed with protesters on the university's main campus, with police firing stun grenades and rubber bullets at marching students.

And while several celebrities have been vocal about the protests, in the weeks leading to these fresh clashes, Black Coffee took to his own Twitter page on Tuesday to share his outrage at the violence.

He described his pain at watching police "assault" students and urged the nation to "get involved".

The DJ's words come amidst reports of tension and violent clashes between police and protesters across the nation over the last two weeks.

Last week video footage emerged of police shooting rubber bullets and dragging an alleged protester at Rhodes University. Singer Simphiwe Dana took to Instagram after the incident to defend the protesters, claiming they were "not violent" and had "protested peacefully".

The protests have also drawn sharp reaction from South African Olympic gold medallist Caster Semenya. The 800-meter running champion hit out at the #FeesMustFall campaign, insisting that students are wasting their time.

"I'm not saying [the campaign] is good or bad but I wouldn't go out there to jeopardise my school work and waste my time toyi-toying because I cannot afford school. Are you just doing that because you're a failure [academically], [attempting to] disturb others so that they cannot graduate or are those people [leading the campaign] postgraduate students?" Caster told Sowetan this week.
